February 10, 2013 welcomed the Year of the Snake. TCA enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year with demonstrations of Tai Chi, Qigong and Wushu in Chinatown and later a live video link between the cities of Melbourne, Perth and the city of Nanjing in China at Federation Square. Although TCA has been involved in the celebrations in Chinatown for many years it was our first time at Federation Square and what a celebration it proved to be.

Modern technology was used to connect a live video link between the cities of Perth and Melbourne using the big outdoor screens at Northbridge Plaza, Perth and Federation Square, Melbourne. This link was an initiative of the City of Perth. At the same time, our Chief Instructor Master Han Jin Song organised a video program with Nanjing for Perth and Melbourne.

This was a unique experience for TCA as it brought three cities together to simultaneously celebrate Chinese New Year and enjoy Chinese art and culture.  Master Song helped to host the links explaining how we celebrated Chinese New Year in Melbourne and then led demonstrations of Tai Chi and Health Qigong.  He encouraged people in Melbourne and Perth to join with Tai Chi and Health Qigong practitioners in Nanjing.  We all also enjoyed the Chinese cultural dances in Melbourne, the Chinese Lion dance in Perth and the Traditional Chinese Medicine discussion that took place between the three cities.

The Federation Square celebration was a rare opportunity for us to have an overview of how a Chinese city typically celebrated Chinese New Year.  TCA was honoured to play a major role.
