Where do you have classes?

We have classes located throughout Melbourne, Shepparton and Tasmania. For more details please go to our classes page.

Can I start classes any time in the year?

Our class curriculum follows the school terms ie. 4 x 10 week terms per year. We have a beginner's class commencing at all of our venues at the start of each school term. The school terms usually start around the end of January, mid-April, mid-July and early October. You may start half way through a term if necessary.

How much does a Tai Chi class cost?

Our public classes are based on 10 x 1 hour classes plus a 2 hour park session (weather permitting) per term. Our term fees are $95.00 ($85 concession) for Beginners.

What should I wear for Tai Chi?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat-soled shoes such as tennis shoes or slip-ons. It is not advisable to wear cross-trainers as they interfere with your balance. While Tai Chi can be performed with bare feet, we strongly recommend that you do not have bare feet in class due to the risk of injury. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, it is also considered unwise to get cold feet, so bare feet in Winter is not recommended even at home.

How do I know if I will like Tai Chi?

No one can know whether they will like Tai Chi until they try it. Tai Chi Australia offers a free introductory class for all Beginners to see if they like it. If you find that Tai Chi is not for you, you are under no obligation and it has cost you nothing. If you enjoy your first class you may sign up for the first term.

What happens if I miss a Tai Chi class?

If you miss a class, you may attend any other class during that week or the following week at no extra cost. For details of the beginners classes please go to our beginners classes page. If you know you are going to be away for a couple of weeks, please discuss your progress with your instructor.

Can I attend more than one class a week?

Yes, you are more than welcome to attend as many classes as you wish. Each additional class you attend will cost $30 per term or $5 per class.

Is a one hour class of Tai Chi per week enough?

We usually find that you cannot retain any more information than is learnt in a one hour class. The key to your improvement is the amount of time you practice what you learn. We strongly recommend that you set aside as much time as possible during the week to practice what you have learnt. The more you practice, the more you will benefit from Tai Chi.

When is the best time to practice and for how long?

Most people in China practice in the early morning as it increases your energy levels, prepares your body and mind for the day and cleanses your internal organs. The ideal amount of time to set aside would be one hour per day. However, we often have limited time and opportunity to practice so do your practice whenever you can and for however long or short a period of time as you can find without getting stressed. It is better that you enjoy five minutes practice than worry about trying to find an hour in a very busy day.

How do I know if my instructor is good?

This is a very common problem here in Australia. Firstly, you should be looking for an instructor that is a Nationally Accredited Sporting Coach. This ensures that they meet the Australian Sports Commission's guidelines for quality tuition, safe practice and insurance.
Secondly, you should check to see how much training your instructor has. This includes the amount of tuition the instructor undertakes every year. Your instructor needs to keep learning as much as you do.

How do I know I am in safe hands?

At Tai Chi Australia all of our instructors have been accredited by the Australian Sports Commission as Official Government Accredited Instructors. This means they have undertaken Risk Management, Sports Psychology, Sports Physiology and First Aid Training. In addition, all of Tai Chi Australia's instructors have Professional Indemnity Insurance and Public Liability Insurance should an accident happen. In other words, you are being cared for by professionals with your best interests at heart.
